What's next in the mobile world!!!

Are you thinking that we have almost reached the end of the road in terms of innovations in mobile world? If yes then you are wrong. So what more can we expect? From screen sizes to camera mega pixels, from various types of mail clients to numerous apps, normal key commands to voice commands, better and better OS, processors, RAM sizes, storage sizes! We have almost everything that we can think of in mobile phones or in equivalent gadget like tablet PC. So can you think of anything new that can be a real value addition feature in mobile? I have one.

Actually while driving yesterday, this idea came to my mind. I had my Bluetooth headset on to receive a call. But I suddenly realized that I haven’t informed the person whom I’m going to meet. So I decided to call him up to inform that I’ll be reaching. His name was not on my most / quick dialed list so I had to search through the contact list to get his number for dialing  The contact name I had to dial started with S. The Voice command feature has never really worked for me, so I had only two options left. Either I scroll all the way from A to S in the contact list or type his name in the search. Now while driving the car at speed of 100 kmph both of these options pose difficulties and are dangerous. I was wondering if any gadget could make this task easy.  So I thought of all possible available gadgets but I found none. What kind of device can help me in this?

Then I saw the stereo controls mounted on my car steering and I wondered can something like this be done for mobile phones? Can I see my mobile screen on my steering and have button next to it to browse through my phone? So that I can keep an eye on the road while driving and still can scroll through my contact list.

So what kind of device will it be? How will it look like? What kind of feature should it have? I’ll share with you what I thought.
So what kind of device will it be? It should be like a phone but without any SIM card.
How will it look like? It should not be a device with fix look and feel. It should be in various shape and sizes.
What kind of feature should it have? To start with it should be able to do the basic phone tasks like receive or dial call, search through contact, read SMS.

I went on thinking…

After arrival of Android, almost all phones have become smart phones. Or rather, difference
between smart phones and normal phones has almost vanished. But as mobile manufacturers kept on adding newer features to their phone the basic use of phone has become little inconvenient. For example, in the touch screen phones it is little difficult to scroll through the contact list because you are not sure how much it will scroll in one swap. You remember Nokia 3310. It used to have a up and down button to scroll through any list. One is one item up or down. Very simple maths, but in touch screen it is not so simple. Or for example after the screen size war, talking on some bigger screen size phone like Samsung Note is possible but if you talk for more then 2-3 minutes it tiresome. But all these phones have their advantages in other areas.

So should we use two handsets? One for just calling like Nokia 3310 equivalent and other is Samsung Note or whatever you like? That will be raises another problem, I have to have two connections and carry two phones always.
Some innovations are already done to tackle some of these problems, like for bigger or heavy phones you can use headsets. But these gadgets also have their own limitations like headset can be used only for talking or listening, What about scrolling through contact list or reading SMS?
So here I feel, is the solution to most of these problems. First of all, it is not gadget like headset but it is more of a technology like Bluetooth. Where other device can clone phone and can act as if it is standalone phone. E.g. if you have Samsung Note because you have see lot of videos or read big documents in which big screen size of Samsung Note helps you. But you are uncomfortable while talking on Samsung Note.  So if I gave you Nokia 3310 equivalent gadget but no SIM slot and you can connect that to your Samsung Note and you can make / receive call or read / sent SMS like normal phone, but it will use mobile network from Samsung Note. So with this you don’t have to take two connections for this but still you can use gadget that suit best for requirement.

One more scenario where this technology can be very useful. Similar gadget can mount on my car steering. So while driving I can search through my contact list with button mounted on steering and call using them. Actually call while happen from smart phone which lying on my car dash board. Car audio system can be used for listening and mike mounted on steering can be use for talking. Yep that solves my yesterday’s problem, while driving with out much of attention towards phone instrument I can call my friend.

Similarly USB dongle can also use for this as well. So when I’m working on my laptop, using this USB dongle my laptop can also act as phone.

So you can think of fitting this technology into some other gadget that you use, so that when you are working on that gadget, you don’t have to touch your cell phone for communication. How do you find this idea? Interesting!!! Is some mobile hardware company’s innovation cell is reading this blog post?

  1. An interesting idea! This means I can pay more attention to the capabilities of the phone than on the size. In iOS, it is possible to set your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. I wish someone can use this and write an app that can receive commands from another device.
