Google Nexus 7 – Simply the Best

This is the second article I am writing on Google Nexus 7. That shows how much I am in love with this device. My earlier post is more of comparison between similar tablets. But this one is completely dedicated to Google Nexus 7. One thing I should admit that Google + ASUS has pulled out absolute gem of device. Many are feeling that the success of Google Nexus 7 is because of its price, but if you ask me it is a lesser point about Nexus 7’s success. The entire package is great and not just the price. So let’s go and check out Nexus 7 hands on.

So my friend who got me iPhone again fulfilled my wish and helped me purchase Google Nexus 7 from abroad. Dear Google kindly consider Indian market, we are a fast growing market in mobile and tablet devices, so release your products for India as well. Else I have to bother my friend again and again to get it from the US.  Right from the packing, I fell in love with Nexus 7. Packing of Google Nexus 7 is as good as any Apple product. (Packing of any Apple product is considered to be the best in the world.) Open the box and there you go, one the most beautiful devices in your hand. Google Nexus 7 feels premium. So thumbs up for ASUS for that. After a few configuration steps Nexus 7 started and the first feel of the screen was wowwww. A thought crossed my mind, is this device really available at 200$?

I started browsing through Nexus 7 and I realized that it comes with bear minimum preloaded app. Now some of you may say that is this a great thing? Yes, because many pre loaded apps that come with any device are used very rarely but they eat up a lot of space. And many times we simply ignore uninstalling them, which hampers the performance of your device. You always have a choice to install them from Google Play any way. So I like a clean new device where I can decide what to install and what not and which is what exactly Google Nexus 7 delivers in terms of pre loaded app.

While I was browsing through it, I realized that the response from touch screen was quick and accurate, even on edges and corners. Opening any app or working within any app is very fast, which shows the power of the processor. I have not experienced any sluggishness in any activity on Nexus 7. Display is crystal clear. Watching movie on this is eye soothing experience. My wife has already seen some 3-4 movies on it and she is not ready to leave the device. (BTW I have gifted this to my wife.) On board speakers are good enough if you are listening in a closed room. Bluetooth works as expected, but I was not able to test NFC since I didn't have any other NFC device.

Soon I started using Google Nexus 7; I received the system update for Android. And that reminds me that the device has the Android from Google itself (native OS as it is called), so no delay in getting update. As soon as Google releases any update my Nexus 7 will upgrade to that. So I don’t have to wait till my manufacturer releases an update from me. Just like it happens in my iPhone.

All the while when I was checking the amazing Google Nexus 7 I did not even realize that I am holding it for more than an hour. It was so light and perfectly fitted in my palm that I was not at all tired of holding it even after an hour. In this article I don’t want to get into tech specs so I’m not mentioning any size or weight but Google Nexus 7 is just perfect in terms of both. I think 7 inch is the correct size for tablet if you looking for display size and mobility. And I think that the reason and looking at popularity of 7 inch tablet, Apple also has come out with iPad mini which is just 0.9 inch bigger then Google Nexus 7, which is actually against Steve Jobs wish. Here is an original quote from the genius Steve Jobs “7-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smart phone and too small to compete with the iPad. ….7-Inch tablets are dead on arrival.”

Okie back to Google Nexus 7… the only disappointment in Nexus 7 is its storage. I have no complaints about not having back side camera, since I don’t believe you can click snap using tablet. And the front camera works perfectly for web calls like skype. I’m also ok with having only 8 / 16 GB in built storage but they should have given expandable slot so that I could store lots of songs and movies. You can connect USB drive to Nexus 7 but it is not a clean way if you want to have more storage. Especially if you want to lie down and want to watch movies then connecting external drive is not very convenient.

One more missing feature that people think can hamper Google Nexus 7 sales is that it has only Wi-Fi as data connection. No slot 2G/3G/4G sim card in Nexus 7. But I don’t see this as a major draw back as nowadays almost all smart phones can work as wireless router (USB tethering / Person Hotspot). And you can’t replace your phone with Nexus 7. So start wireless router on your phone and enjoy browsing from Google Nexus 7. I will surely write how to convert your smart phone into personal Wi-Fi router in the coming days.

GadgetDost Verdict:
Simply go and get it.

PS: This is first gadget that my wife liked so much that she is not ready to leave it. I was under impression that I will get Google Nexus 7 after the initial enthusiasm was over. But alas! That has not been the case, ;) at least so far. So, now I’m seriously thinking of buying one more for myself.
