Have Nokia and Microsoft missed the Bus

So finally the much talked and hyped launch of Nokia Lumia Series handsets was done just two days back. Call it rumors or news, it was in media since September 2012. So mathematically it is late by almost 5 months, but i think they really missed the opportunity to get back to their position in the mobile market. Everyone was almost certain that Nokia will launch their much awaited Lumia series (packed with Windows 8 OS) during the time of Apple Samsung war, to get the ground. So they started talking about it at that time but were not able to deliver. And by the time they got it in the market, Samsung and Apple both ceased fire and got back to their positions. So now it will be very difficult for Nokia to get into market and reach the top.

In the mean time Microsoft launched Windows 8 for desktop and laptop users keeping in mind that if it gets popular in this category then it might help Windows mobile sales. But that wasn't the case. About Windows 8 in desktop & laptop segment there are two extreme feedbacks. One group is saying that it is just a wrapper on Windows 7 OS, and the other is saying that it is a completely new revolutionary OS from Microsoft. Over all not much excitement about Windows 8 in computer world. So one more reason why I feel Windows Phone will have tough time in the market.

Nokia has launched 3 models of Lumia series which has Windows 8 OS. Lumia 920, 820 and 620. Top end model Lumia 920 costs about Rs. 38000-40000. I think Nokia has priced it much higher. They might say it is Rs. 5000 less than iPhone, but I really doubt that Apple customers will buy Windows phone. One of my friend has said a brilliant line about the attitude of Apple customers. 'You have Apple or you don't have Apple. It's as simple as that.' So none of the hard core Apple fans will shift to Windows phone just for a gain of Rs. 5000. If that is the case then Samsung S3 is a much better choice for them since it is costs less than Rs. 10000. So if you look at the price bracket I think Nokia should have targeted Samsung pricing. Samsung S3 now costs just Rs. 32000 with the recent price drop from Samsung. There is no out of the box feature in Lumia series phone to support this price difference over the Samsung best seller. So I think one more reason that might affect the sale of Lumia series.

So over all it will be very interesting to see how Nokia Lumia series progresses in the market which currently seems to be stagnant.
