iPhone 5 – No Revolution, Plain Upgrade

So iPhone 5 pre booking has started and it will be in hand by 22nd Sept. So here is a quick look on iPhone if you are thinking of pre booking it. Before starting the quick review of iPhone 5, let me tell you that the comparison of iPhone 5 in this review is with iPhone 4S and not with any other model. So what is new in iPhone 5?

Bigger Display:
So finally Apple read my blog on iPhone 4S where I said that the display size could have been little more. And boy they listened to me. They came up with a 4 inch retina display. They have not made any change in display technology and gone with one of the best they have ever produced, retina display. And I think 4 inch is right display for mobile phone bigger than this is a bit problematic to use as phone.

Lighter:
I think Apple has taken my iPhone 4S review seriously. This is the second of the cons I mentioned in that review. iPhone 4S is little heavier than its size. So what Apple did was that they did not just increase display size but with bigger size they have been able to reduce its weight as well. This is something great that they’ve done. Making bigger and better model than its predecessor with increased weight is normal but with lesser weight is definitely an achievement. Kudos to team Apple.  It is not just lighter but thinner than iPhone 4S. Great!

Connectivity:
As expected iPhone 5 comes with LTE (100 MBPS) support. It also supports DC-HSDPA (42 MBPS). It comes with dual band 802.11n wireless connectivity as well, which goes up to 150 MBPS. So connectivity is much faster and better.

Faster Processor:
iPhone 5 comes with all new A6 processor, faster ever in any iPhone. But I really feel iPhone 4S is not slow by any means. It is almost two times faster than A5 processor (iPhone 4S comes with A5 processor). RAM size has also doubled. iPhone 5 comes with 1 GB of RAM. So people who play lot of games on iPhone can really enjoy gaming experience on iPhone with bigger display faster processor and more RAM.

Other:
iPhone 5 battery life is little better than 4S. It comes with apple earpod (next generation head phone). iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6, again all new mobile OS from apple. Google MAP is gone in iOS 6 and it comes with apple’s own application for MAP. The iPhone 5 is made of aluminium and glass. No major changes in camera. It is still 8 MP as you get in iPhone 4S. But now you can take panorama shot in iPhone 5.

So is iPhone 5 drastically different from iPhone 4S? I don’t think so. Other than display size and weight nothing great has been added in iPhone 5. Usual upgrades like latest connectivity

options, little better battery life, more RAM. But really nothing to the core has been changed. iPhone 5 comes with nano SIM slot and lighting connector. So your existing SIM card will not fit in iPhone 5. Yes even if you have iPhone 4S, SIM in iPhone 4S is Micro SIM slot. And if you are planning to use it in India then you’ll have to wait for some more time since no mobile operator in India offer nano SIM card as of today. And you can’t cut micro SIM and make it nano. About lighting connector, if you have any existing dock for iPhone or iTouch or iPad new iPhone 5 will not dock in that. You have to buy lighting to 30 pin adapter ($29) to make it compatible.

Gadgetdost verdict:Its like one of my friend said “you have a iPhone or you don’t have iPhone. Simple” if you have purchased iPhone 4S or 4 less than a year back then you should not upgrade it to iPhone 5 but if you are looking for iPhone then you should go for this.

Tips for Indian Reader:
iPhone 5 is not compatible with any service provider in India right now. So you have to wait till some one comes up with nano SIM card. But I think this is the right time to go for iPhone 4 or 4S. Officially unlocked iPhone 4 is available at $450 and iPhone 4S at $550 if you can buy it outside India. I am sure we will have the price cut in Indian market as well. So keep a watch on it.

  2. Apple earpod is design based on ear-bud, which feel good to your ear and fit securely in ear. The change is not just in design but apple re-engineered an earbud speaker diaphragm with both rigid and flexible materials to minimize sound loss and maximize sound output. Strategically placed acoustic vents gives superior audio quality.

And about your question Yes... You can use it with iPhone 4S or for that matter with any phone which has 3.5mm audio jack.

  3. The iPhone 5 supports the faster 4G network. Analysts have forecast that Apple will have sold more than 30 million iPhones, including older models, by the end of September.
